There are thousands of plugins in the WordPress repository but many WordPress developers have submitted their plugins in the GitHub directory and you can install WordPress plugins and themes from GitHub.
First, let me tell you a little bit about GitHib. It’s a free platform where web developers host their projects.
If you’re a web developer, you would already be aware of this amazing platform. It’s basically a hosting platform you can use.
They provide the space to place your development project which can be spread to the world. In this article, you will learn how to install WordPress plugins and themes from GitHub.
Start Downloading WordPress Plugins And Themes
You can easily search the plugins and themes in the GitHub directory. And if you’re seeking for a way to install any plugin or theme, you would already know the name of them.
Once you find that plugin or theme, you will see a button below it.
On the right side, you will see a button to “Clone and Download” the plugin and theme. Click on that and a drop-down popup will appear.
You can check it by visiting this plugin page.
You will see two options. Open in Desktop and Download ZIP. Click on the second option and depending on the size of the plugin and theme, it will get downloaded to your computer hard drive.
Make sure you keep this ZIP file safe.
Installing That Plugin or Theme In WordPress
It’s pretty simple like installing any other third party plugin. If you know all the different ways to install plugins in WordPress then you can easily accomplish this.
Login to your WordPress admin panel and go to Plugins>>Add New and you will see a button “Upload Plugin”.
Just after clicking that button, you will see an option to “choose file” from your computer.
Choose the ZIP file you have downloaded for the plugin and click on the “Install Now” button which will be clickable once you choose the file.
The process will continue and you will see the unpacking and installation of the plugin.
Click on the “Activate Plugin” and within a few seconds, the plugin will get activated and you will see it in the list of installed plugins along with all other.
The same process can be followed for any WordPress theme. Just download the ZIP file and upload it to your WordPress website.
How Would You Come To Know About The Updates
This is the question people ask quite often. It’s always recommended to keep your WordPress website updated.
Many people even enable automatic updates for WordPress plugins, themes, and the WordPress core when they don’t have enough time to manage their website.
GitHub is also taking care of it. You can use GitHub Updater to get notified of all the possible updates for the plugins and themes you have installed from it.
Isn’t That Easy To Install WordPress Plugins And Themes From GitHub
I know it can be a little bit of hard for the non-techie people but once you find the plugin or the theme, you wouldn’t face any kind of problem.
There are a ton of plugins available on this amazing platform. Many WordPress developers keep their project under their control using GitHub.

A very awesome tutorial Ravi,
WordPress themes and plugin installation is considered one of the easiest (if not the easiest) aspects of blogging, this is especially when you’re installing via the normal way we all are already used to.
However, I’ve never tried installing through Github before, maybe because i haven’t seen the need to do that. But, this tutorial really covered it very well so that even the dumbest blogger will be able to also install his themes and plugins through this means without any issues.
A very useful post indeed. Do keep it up.
Thanks for sharing.
Good to see you here.:)
WordPress repository has thousands of plugins which can help you accomplish everything you need on a WordPress blog. But there are many other plugins on GitHub which are effective.
I am going to write another post which is about solving a WordPress error. The error can only be solved if you install that specific plugin from GutHub.
We all should know about these techie things.
Thanks for stopping by.
